Contemporary Art Practice

Maria Roman

The aim for this degree show is to visually explore the theme of “recreation of selfhood” through recorded memory, layered narrative and body iconography using variations of self-portraiture solutions.

By working on mixed media pieces (drawing, painting, collage) Maria Roman is building a communication channel between the Romanian and the Scottish heritage that ought to serve as a visual exploration of such notions as “home”, “the semantics of culture” and “proposing a new alphabet, new grammar for the modern day immigrant”.

In terms of broader framework she is researching artists and theorists such as Shirin Neshat, Angela McRobbie, Michel Foucault and Ana Mendieta that all have as common denominator in their works the theme of “immigrant identity and semantics of place”.
