Hannah Paterson is interested in the behaviours of human beings and their relationship towards natural resources. Her work explores humanity’s search for purity, through these natural resources, and how this endeavour can paradoxically lead to unhealthy obsessions.
Her research has been influenced by the behaviours of people with OCD, particularly where it is expressed through excessive handwashing, which she uses as a metaphor for the wider concept of seeking specious purity. Paterson makes use of repetition and form through symbolic objects and materials, like soap and salt, drawing attention to the gradual physical and emotional damage caused by being trapped in a cycle of unfulfilling desires
